The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Caucus at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, has issued a statement reassuring members and the public that despite the ongoing internal crisis, the party remains strong and poised to emerge even stronger at the end.
In a Press Briefing on Tuesday, to address concerns over the Party’s stability, the caucus led by the Senate Minority leader, Senator Abba Moro, said, that the conflicts within the PDP are not unique, pointing out that other major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), also face their own challenges.
The caucus therefore, urged all PDP members to remain committed, dedicated, and loyal to the party, expressing confidence that the leadership’s planned activities will revitalise the party and enhance its competitiveness in future elections.
According to him, “the importance of a healthy democracy is a robust opposition which is essential to keep the ruling party in check and ensure good governance.
It cautioned against celebrating the weakening of opposition parties or moving towards a one-party state; saying, such trends undermine democratic progress.
On the issue of coalition politics, the caucus stated its openness to the idea, provided that coalition efforts are driven by political parties rather than individuals.
As the largest opposition party, the PDP maintains that its platform is broad enough to accommodate coalition partners, and that the party should lead any future coalition initiatives.
Abba Morro led caucus, reiterated that the PDP is a strong, competitive political brand with members across Nigeria. It also expressed confidence that from the current internal struggles, they will emerge a renewed and vibrant party ready to offer Nigerians a credible alternative to the ruling party.
The caucus called on all members to rededicate themselves to the party’s principles and demonstrate unwavering loyalty, emphasising their role in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
