From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Kwara State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Onifade Joshua, has called on the state government and employers of labour to improve the welfare of corps members serving in the state, saying enhanced support is crucial in the face of current economic challenges.

Speaking at the official swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 corps members deployed to Kwara State, Onifade praised the federal government for the recent upward review of corps members’ monthly allowances.

He, however, appealed to the state government, local government authorities, and private employers to emulate the gesture by introducing additional incentives and support systems for the corps members.

“Corps members deserve more than just a place of assignment. Employers must show real appreciation for their contributions by providing modest accommodation and a reasonable transport allowance,” Onifade said.

“These young Nigerians are dedicating a year of their lives to serve the nation. A little more support will go a long way in encouraging their best efforts.”

He stressed that the corps members’ welfare must be treated as a priority by all stakeholders, noting that poor living conditions could dampen their morale and affect their productivity at their various places of primary assignment.

A total of 1,308 corps members were officially sworn in during the ceremony held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of the state.

Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon Shehu Usman, welcomed the corps members to the “State of Harmony” and encouraged them to be law-abiding and committed to nation-building throughout their service year.

“The state appreciates your decision to serve in Kwara, and we urge you to integrate with your host communities and contribute positively to their development,” the governor’s representative stated.

Justice H. Ajayi, who represented the Chief Judge of Kwara State, administered the oath of allegiance to the corps members, urging them to remain loyal to the ideals of the NYSC and the Nigerian Constitution.

The event marked the beginning of the corps members’ journey in Kwara, with stakeholders hopeful that the call for better welfare will resonate across public and private sectors in the state.
