From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Engr. Kadiri Oluwatoyin, has said that the ongoing 22nd Nigeria Polytechnic Games Association (NIPOGA), is more than a sports competition, describing it as a symbol of Nigeria’s youthful talent, unity, and national pride.

Speaking during the vibrant opening ceremony today, at the institution’s sports complex in Offa, Kwara State, Dr. Kadiri, who also chairs the NIPOGA Caretaker Committee, said the games represent a major milestone for polytechnic education and sports development in the country.

“This is more than the commencement of a sporting festival. It is a celebration of our growth and journey as an institution.

“Hosting NIPOGA 2024, themed Ijakadi, is a testament to our rising profile among tertiary institutions in Nigeria and across Sub-Saharan Africa,” he said.

Over 5,000 student-athletes and officials from polytechnics across the country are participating in the 10-day event, competing in 12 sports.

According to the Rector, while medals and trophies are important, the real victory lies in what the games stand for.

“The eyes of the nation are on Offa,” he said. “Through these games, we are narrating a story of resilience, unity, and the vast potential embedded in our youths. Thanks to digital platforms and TV broadcasts, Nigerians everywhere can follow the action.”

Coincidentally, the opening ceremony also marked the Rector’s second anniversary in office, adding personal significance to the event. He expressed gratitude to the Polytechnic’s Governing Council led by Alhaji Moshood O. Ojikutu, the management, academic deans, and directors for their commitment to the institution’s progress.

Dr. Kadiri also urged athletes and officials to compete with discipline and fairness while encouraging guests to explore Offa’s cultural sites, including the Palace of the Olofa, Essa Palace, and the Moremi Hall of Fame.

“There’s more to Offa than sports—we are a people of deep history and warm hospitality,” he said.

He assured all participants of adequate security and smooth logistics throughout the event, before officially declaring the games open.

“I hereby declare the 22nd NIPOGA Games open. I wish every participant a memorable time and safe return to your various destinations at the end of the competition,” he concluded.
