A new era of grassroots football development has begun in Kwara State with the launch of the Aiedu Football Academy (AFA) in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area.
The academy, founded by U.S.-based entrepreneur, Aliyu Isa-Aiedu, is focused on nurturing young talents and offering them a pathway to professional football.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony held at Lafiagi Township Stadium, Aiedu emphasised that the academy was born out of his passion for football and desire to support young players who lack opportunities.
“Football is more than just a game; it is a powerful tool for empowerment. Many young talents in Nigeria struggle due to a lack of structured support. AFA is here to bridge that gap and provide them with the necessary training and exposure,” he said.
He further shared his personal story, revealing that his own football dreams were cut short due to limited opportunities.
“I know what it feels like to have talent but no platform. This academy is my way of making sure that young players in Kwara don’t face the same struggles I did,” he added.
The Director of Football at AFA, Dr. Ndanuza Manzuma, assured that the academy was structured to provide professional coaching and international exposure.
“We have a clear vision to make AFA a breeding ground for top talents. With the right support, we can produce players who will excel at national and international levels,” he stated.
The event featured an exhibition match where AFA’s young players showcased their potential by defeating Ilorin-based Dolly P Academy FC 2-0, with goals from Mohammed Babawo and Mubarak Musiliu. The impressive display reinforced hopes that the academy could become a major talent hub in Kwara State.
