Kogi State Local Government Civil Service Commission has organized a capacity-building workshop for Clerks and Legislative Assistants from the 21 Local Government Areas.
This initiative is part of the state government’s commitment to human capital development and improved governance under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Local Government Civil Service Commission, Alhaji Adams Adabenege, emphasised the critical role legislative officers play in fostering effective governance.
He explained that the state government is focused on equipping legislative staff with the necessary skills to maximize productivity.
According to him, legislative career officers bear numerous responsibilities, including convening meetings, preparing minutes and reports, and advising councils on critical matters, adding that Clerks serve as key advisors and administrative anchors within the council, ensuring that resolutions are implemented in line with legal provisions.
The workshop featured presentations from experienced legal and legislative experts who shared insights on the responsibilities of Clerks and the need for harmonious Legislative-Executive relationships.
Barrister Bamidele Suru of Equity Draftsman Law Office, in his presentation, described Clerks as the engine room of council operations.
He explained that Clerks serve as administrative officers, accounting officers, and chief advisors, noting that their role is essential in bridging the legislative and executive arms of local government to avoid conflicts and foster collaboration.
Barrister Suru expressed optimism that the workshop would help participants develop strategies to ensure smooth governance at the grassroots.
In another session, the Deputy Clerk of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Alfa Mohammed, discussed the importance of sustainability in legislative processes.
Ndaje emphasised that the training was necessary to equip newly appointed Clerks with the knowledge and skills required to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
According to him, the program aims to enhance legislative business and improve interactions between the legislative and executive arms of the local government. He advised participants to embrace continuous learning, describing it as vital for professional growth and effective governance.
Several participants expressed gratitude for the training and shared their expectations for its impact. Aruwa Samuel, Legislative Assistant from Dekina Local Government Council, described the workshop as enlightening, stating that it had broadened their understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
Osomo Mary, Legislative Assistant from Ogori/Magongo Local Government, noted the relevance of the program in promoting better governance.
Similarly, Godwin Paul, Clerk of Ofu Local Government, appreciated the commission for prioritizing the professional development of legislative officers.
This workshop underscores Kogi State’s dedication to strengthening local government systems by equipping personnel with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver quality governance to the people.
