Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has added 53 new professionals to Nigeria’s healthcare workforce following the induction of its 2024/2025 Medical Laboratory Science graduates into the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

The induction, held at the university’s Mini Convocation Arena, marked the institution’s seventh oath-taking ceremony, bringing the total number of qualified medical laboratory scientists produced by KWASU to 765.
With the ceremony, the graduates are now licensed to practise after completing the mandatory internship and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, described the inductees as well-prepared professionals equipped to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s healthcare system.
He said, “You have gone through a rigorous academic and clinical process that has positioned you among key players in healthcare delivery. KWASU remains committed to blending theory with hands-on training to produce competent graduates.”

Jimoh highlighted the role of the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), in strengthening students’ clinical exposure, noting that the upgrade of the former Ilorin General Hospital has significantly enhanced practical training.
According to him, “Our students from 300 to 500 level are now fully deployed to KWASUTH, giving them the opportunity to acquire real-life clinical experience that prepares them for professional practice.”

He urged the new scientists to remain resourceful and uphold high standards, stressing that the health sector requires critical thinkers capable of improving patient outcomes.
The Acting Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of MLSCN, Dr Donald Ofili, commended the university’s management for prioritising practical training. Represented by Dr George Olajide, he noted that the collaboration between the council and KWASU reflects a shared commitment to excellence.

“The deployment of students to a functional teaching hospital is a step in the right direction and will ensure the production of highly skilled professionals,” he said.
Also speaking, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Moyosore Ajao, said the department has continued to produce graduates making impact both within Nigeria and abroad.
Earlier, the Coordinator of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Abdulrazaq Mustapha, disclosed that the graduating set recorded two First Class degrees, 22 Second Class Upper, 22 Second Class Lower, and seven Third Class honours.
The highlight of the event was the administration of the professional oath, formally ushering the graduates into the league of certified medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria.
