From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has launched an updated voter education manuals which it said will boost participation in the 2027 general elections.

The manuals were developed with the Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), aimed at educating Citizens and encourage electoral participation.

The representative of INEC Chairman, Mohammed Haruna, highlighted the decline in voter turnout from 60% in 2003 to below 30% in recent elections. Though, he attributed this to lack of knowledge and motivation among Nigerians to exercise their right to vote.

The National Commissioner, Malam Haruna warned that, voter apathy threatens Nigeria’s democracy, citing data showing a widening participation gap. He emphasized that laws alone can’t solve disengagement, stressing the need for sustained civic education.

The Electoral Act 2026 strengthens transparency through improved legal frameworks and electronic processes. However, INEC recognizes that rebuilding trust and participation requires more than laws.

The commission is thereby calling for sustained civic education to address voter apathy. “An indifferent electorate is a democracy in retreat,” the keynote stressed.

The manuals also target various groups, including youths, to encourage participation. While INEC hopes the renewed push will yield better turnout in 2027.

The launch marked a fresh push to boost participation ahead of the 2027 polls.
