From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has recorded a significant breakthrough in its medical programme with the approval of its preclinical training by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

The approval was announced recently during an exit briefing by the council’s accreditation team in Ilorin, marking a major milestone for the institution’s College of Health Sciences and its drive to deepen medical education in Kwara State.

Leader of the team and MDCN Deputy Registrar, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakama, commended the strong collaboration between KWASU and the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital, noting that the partnership is vital to the success of the programme.

He, however, stressed that medical education is both capital and manpower intensive, urging sustained investment in infrastructure and human resources to maintain standards.

“This programme is highly capital and human resource intensive. Continuous investment is essential to ensure its growth and long-term sustainability,” he said.

Reacting, the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina El-Imam, conveyed the appreciation of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, describing the accreditation as a validation of the state government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare education.

She noted that the outcome underscores the critical role of the MDCN in upholding standards and advancing medical training across Nigeria.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of KWASU, Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, expressed satisfaction with the positive assessment and lauded the thorough accreditation process.

“We are pleased with the outcome and grateful for the detailed evaluation. We are committed to addressing all identified gaps to further strengthen the programme,” he stated.

With the approval secured, 300-level medical students of KWASU are now eligible to proceed to clinical training after sitting for their first professional examination—an important step toward producing qualified medical professionals to meet Nigeria’s growing healthcare demands.
