From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Kwara State Government, has approved the reopening of all schools across the state from Monday, February 2, 2026, following what it described as significant improvement in the security situation.

The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, saying school authorities had already been directed to prepare for immediate resumption.

According to the commissioner, the decision was taken after sustained security operations by relevant agencies led to notable gains in the fight against criminal elements threatening public safety.

“The government deems the situation now to be a lot better than it was before. Even so, we continue to maintain vigilance to ensure the safety of learners, teachers and school infrastructure,” Olohungbebe said.

He noted that security agencies are still actively on ground, maintaining pressure on bandits and other criminal groups, while efforts are being intensified to consolidate the progress recorded in recent weeks.

The commissioner added that beyond kinetic operations, the state government is also strengthening community-based measures to enhance resilience and early warning mechanisms, especially in areas previously affected by security concerns.

Olohungbebe reassured parents, guardians and school administrators of the government’s commitment to safeguarding the learning environment, urging them to cooperate with security agencies and promptly report any suspicious activities.

The announcement comes weeks after the temporary closure of schools in parts of the state as a precautionary measure against rising security threats.
