The Kwara State Government, has committed over N4.6 billion as counterpart funding for the construction of 209.77 kilometers of rural roads across all 16 local government areas.
The initiative aims to boost economic activities, improve connectivity, and curb rural-urban migration.
Dr. Isaac Kolo, the State Coordinator of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), disclosed this in Ilorin during the 47th Kwara NUJ Media Engagement.
He emphasised that the first phase of the project would cover 66.5 kilometers of roads across Asa, Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Oyun, and Edu local government areas.
Additionally, 39.6 kilometers of roads will be constructed in Baruten, a border community with the Republic of Benin.
To further support rural development, Kolo revealed that agro-logistics hubs would be established across the three senatorial districts.
“These hubs will modernise market infrastructure and provide farmers with better access to markets, ensuring they get value for their produce,” he said.
He assured that the road construction would be completed next year, noting that improved road access would not only ease the movement of goods and services but also reduce crime and discourage migration to urban centers.
“This project is a game-changer for our rural communities, as it will open up economic opportunities and improve living standards,” he added.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council, Comrade Ahmed Abdullateef, commended the government’s efforts and underscored the role of the media in ensuring transparency and accountability.
“The timing of this discussion is crucial, considering the state of road infrastructure in the country. The media must continue to advocate for quality road networks that serve the people,” he stated.
The road expansion initiative is expected to enhance agricultural productivity, ease transportation challenges, and contribute to the overall economic growth of the state.
