As Clergyman calls on Nigerians to shun greed

From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Journalists in Kwara State have been urged to prioritise the promotion of peace and unity in their reportage to foster a harmonious and thriving society.

The call was made by the Deputy Governor in the State, Mr. Kayode Alabi, during the 6th Carol Service of the Christian Fellowship of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Chapter.

The event, themed “And They Shall Call His Name Emmanuel” from Matthew 1:23, was held in Ilorin.

Represented by the Senior Special Assistant on Christian Matters to the Governor, Reverend Timothy Akangbe, Mr. Alabi, encouraged Christians to support the government’s developmental efforts through prayers and their professional contributions.

He said, “Journalists have a unique role in shaping public discourse, and I urge you to use this power to promote peaceful coexistence and unity among our people.”

In his sermon, Pastor Sam Aweda, the Minister in charge of the People’s Church, emphasised the need for Nigerians to submit to God’s will and align their actions with His commandments to create a better society.

He highlighted how poverty has pushed many into immoral acts, urging them to repent.

“Greed and corruption have no place in a blessed nation like Nigeria,” Pastor Aweda said.

“Our country has sufficient resources to cater to its people if we all shun these vices. The birth of Christ signifies redemption and grace for humanity, which we must embrace.”

Special Apostle Bunmi Adedoyin, the Chairman of the NUJ Christian Fellowship, expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to gather for another Carol service.

He reaffirmed the commitment of journalists to uphold professionalism and fairness in their work, despite the challenges faced in the profession.

Evangelist Olaitan Okunloye of Ileri Oluwa Ministry, led prayers for the Union, its members, Kwara State, and the entire nation.

The event featured soul-lifting renditions by the Seraphim Singers of C&S Movement Church, Ilorin District Headquarters, alongside performances by Sammy Brass and Lady Evangelist Yemisi, who praised God for His protection over the people.

The Carol service ended with a collective call for unity, integrity, and dedication among journalists and leaders in the state.
