…as UBEC applauds grant utilisation

From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has flagged off the distribution of instructional materials, furniture and sports kits to public primary and junior secondary schools across the state, in a move aimed at strengthening basic education delivery.

The distribution, held at the State Universal Basic Education Board headquarters in Ilorin, featured a wide range of items including core subject textbooks, exercise books, pencils, classroom furniture, sandals, sports equipment, digital screen boards, tablets for e-learning centres, mosquito nets for boarding students, and agricultural tools.

Speaking at the event through the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Mamman Jibril, the Governor urged stakeholders to ensure proper use of the materials for improved learning outcomes.

“I want to call on key stakeholders in the education sector — teachers, PTA and pupils — to make effective use of these instructional materials,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustained investment in education.

The intervention also drew commendation from the UBEC, with its Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, praising the Kwara State Government for effectively utilising matching grants to support foundational education.

Represented by her Special Assistant, Ibrahim Gold, Garba said the state’s consistent counterpart funding and learner-focused approach have translated into tangible improvements.

“I commend His Excellency for his impactful collaboration with UBEC in advancing basic education through consistent counterpart funding. These efforts have resulted in improved classroom participation, better learning materials, continuous teacher training and stronger learning foundations for every child in Kwara,” she said.

Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, described the initiative as a strategic step towards ensuring equitable access to quality education across all parts of the state.

“This intervention goes beyond books and materials. It is about equity — ensuring that children in Baruten, Kaiama, Ifelodun and Oke-Ero enjoy the same opportunities as those in Ilorin. When learners have the right tools, teaching becomes more effective and outcomes improve,” he explained.

Also speaking, SUBEB Chairman, Adaramaja, noted that the intervention reflects ongoing collaboration between the state government and UBEC to enhance teaching and learning conditions in public schools.

“Today’s event marks another milestone in our efforts to strengthen basic education and provide a conducive environment for our children. Education remains the most reliable pathway to sustainable development,” he said.

He added that the materials were carefully selected to support academic and co-curricular activities, promote digital literacy, and improve learners’ participation and welfare within the school system.

The event was attended by key government officials, lawmakers, education stakeholders, and representatives of teachers’ unions and school administrators.
