From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Political conversations ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State, are beginning to gather momentum as stakeholders across the state weigh possible successors to the current administration of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.

Among the names drawing attention in recent discussions is Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar, whose reported interest in the governorship race has sparked reactions from political observers, youth groups and community leaders across the state.

Several stakeholders who spoke with our correspondent described the senator as an experienced politician whose background in the legislature could place him in a strong position ahead of the 2027 contest.

A political analyst based in Ilorin, Dr. Musa Bello, said Senator Umar’s legislative experience and involvement in development initiatives have made him one of the figures to watch in the coming election cycle.

“His record in the Senate and his engagement with constituents have contributed to the growing interest in his possible governorship ambition,” Bello said.

Since his election to the Nigerian Senate in 2019, Umar has sponsored and supported more than 30 bills and motions while facilitating several constituency projects and programmes across parts of the state.

The senator also served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Business in both the 9th and 10th Assemblies, a key committee responsible for coordinating legislative activities in the upper chamber.

A youth leader in Ilorin West Local Government Area, Ahmed Lawal, said many young people in the state believe the senator’s experience could contribute to sustaining the development efforts currently ongoing in the state.

“Many youths are paying attention to leaders who have experience and understanding of governance. Senator Umar’s work in the National Assembly has brought him into that conversation,” he said.

Also speaking, a community leader in Kwara South, Mrs. Funke Adeyemi, noted that the senator’s involvement in community programmes has helped increase his visibility across the state.

“People have seen some of the projects and initiatives linked to his office, and that is why his name keeps coming up whenever discussions about the next governorship election arise,” she said.

Political observers also believe that his outstanding achievements in the last 7 years at the Senate, Political antecedents and alignment with the renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, could shape political calculations within the ruling All Progressives Congress as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 election cycle.
