The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has approved the upgrade and revitalisation of Zangiri-Patani International Airport in Kogi State.
This approval, communicated in a letter dated October 9, 2024, comes in response to a formal request from the Kogi State Government submitted on June 25, 2024, for the airport’s development.
The letter directed to Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, outlined the findings of a Ministerial Technical Team that evaluated the proposed upgrades.
The Ministry’s approval is contingent upon several essential conditions that the state government must fulfill prior to the commencement of construction.
Among these is the requirement to secure an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to ensure adherence to environmental and aviation safety standards.
Alongside the EIA, the project will necessitate a thorough geotechnical survey, the installation of weather and navigation systems, and an in-depth assessment of current infrastructure and aerodrome conditions.
The Ministry highlighted the importance of obtaining all required approvals prior to starting construction activities.
Hassana Tai Ejibunu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, signed the letter on behalf of the Minister, emphasising the Ministry’s dedication to partnering with the Kogi State Government for the successful completion of the project.
The airport upgrade is anticipated to enhance aviation services in the state and promote economic growth in the region.
Governor Ododo previously stated that the revitalisation of Zangiri-Patani International Airport, represents a major advancement for Kogi State, pledging to improve domestic and international connectivity and establish the state as an important player in Nigeria.
