*Says measures be taken to stop continued loss of lives

By Ogalla Daniel

Members of the Kogi State House of Assembly, have expressed shock and sadness over Monday’s accident on Felele highway in Lokoja, which claimed the lives of scores of students of Federal University Lokoja.

This is contained in a Resolution signed by the Assembly and made available to journalists in Lokoja by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Yabagi Mohammed.

The Legislators stressed that as an arm of government, the Assembly would not sit and watch the continued reoccurrence of accidents on the road, which has gained notoriety for the deaths of students of higher institutions in Lokoja, the Kogi State Capital.

According to the resolution, the Assembly sympathised with the students, especially the parents of the deceased students and assured them that measures would be taken to address the situation.

The resolution further called on the federal government to create alternative roads through Agbaja Road to enable the shuttle buses conveying students to access the school easily, saying such alternative route is capable of averting the dangers of the highway.

It also called on the state government to increase measures that would help in mitigating the mishap, particularly an increment in the number of vehicle-controlling law enforcement officers and an increase in the number of bumps and other speed-limiting measures on the road to ensure the situation is minimised.

It further called on the government to carry out thorough investigation of the matter to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the dastardly occurrence, so as to nip it in the bud.

The resolution also urged the students not to take laws into their hands, but to allow security agencies and other government personnel carry out their duties to address the situation.
