The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has begun a comprehensive review of its Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, aiming at strengthen party operations and introduce stricter compliance standards before the 2027 General Election.
The three-day Technical Review Workshop, held in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, is supported by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD). Where INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, emphasised that the review is crucial for harmonising the Commission’s regulatory framework with the new Electoral Act 2026.
The Key areas of focus includes, party primaries, membership documentation, financial transparency, and inclusion of women, youth, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The revised guidelines will introduce stricter benchmarks for these areas, ensuring accountability and transparency.
Prof. Amupitan, warned that non-transparent nomination processes could undermine public trust and destabilise the electoral process. He also expressed concern over recurring leadership tussles and intra-party disputes that often end up in court.
The Commission’s authority he said, is anchored on Section 160 of the Constitution and Section 151 of the Electoral Act 2026. He assured stakeholders that it will remain open, accountable, and guided by the law.
National Commissioner, Dr. Baba Bila, described the review as strategic and timely, while WFD Country Director, Adebowale Olorunmola, reaffirmed their technical partnership with INEC.
The outcome of the review will produce a clearer regulatory framework, guiding political parties and safeguarding the integrity of the 2027 General Election.
The revised timetable schedules Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, and Governorship and State Assembly elections for February 6, 2027.
INEC’s efforts is aimed at ensuring credible elections and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
