Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usamn Ododo, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the families and victims of the recent tragic boat accident that occurred along the Damble-Ebuchi sections of the River Niger on Friday.

This devastating incident resulted in the loss of precious lives and left several passengers, including some indigenes of Kogi State, injured.

The Governor said he is particularly saddened that most of the victims were women, petty traders, and artisans who were engaged in legitimate business activities to earn a living and contribute to the state’s economy.

He expressed concern over the rising number of boat accidents on the waterway connecting Kogi and Niger states and calling on authorities to take immediate action to enhance safety measures and reduce the risks associated with water transportation in the region.

He praised the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) for their tireless efforts in the recent search and rescue operation emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach among various agencies to prevent waterway accidents and enhance emergency response management.

The Governor offered his condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives and assured them that the government will provide support to those injured to aid in their recovery.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed the tragic incident, which happened as traders were en route from Kogi State.
