Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

A gas explosion late Friday night caused a devastating fire at a storey building along Ejiba Road in Ilorin, Kwara State, leaving 15 rooms in ruins.

The inferno, which started due to an unattended gas cooker, sent panic through the neighborhood before firefighters brought it under control.

The Kwara State Fire Service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed that the quick response of firefighters prevented further destruction, saving 89 out of the 104 rooms in the building.

“Our team responded swiftly to the distress call and worked tirelessly to contain the fire before it spread further,” he stated.

Expressing concern over the rising cases of fire incidents linked to negligence, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, urged residents to be more cautious with gas usage.

“This is the second gas-related fire in just a week. People must be extremely careful when handling gas cookers to prevent such disasters,” he warned.

The Fire Service reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property while emphasising the importance of fire safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
