From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has facilitated the distribution of 25kg bags of rice and cash to 5,000 widows across the 16 local government areas of Kwara State.

The initiative, aimed at providing support to widows and indigent citizens during the festive season, was carried out on Tuesday in Ilorin.

Beneficiaries were selected irrespective of their religious affiliations.

Speaking during the event, Hon. David Ifabiyi, National Coordinator of the Christian Northern Nigeria Political Forum (CNNPF), representing Kwara, revealed that the programme was the First Lady’s goodwill gesture to ensure widows can celebrate Christmas with joy.

“This has been a yearly activity for the First Lady to distribute foodstuffs to the indigent, especially widows who have lost their breadwinners,” Ifabiyi said.

“The distribution is done in segments to avoid stampedes that may cause injuries or loss of life. After today, the distribution will extend to various local governments in the state.”

Ifabiyi also emphasised the need for Christians to engage in politics, noting that misconceptions about politics being “dirty” have discouraged participation.

He urged Christians to get involved with the fear of God, stressing that their contribution can make a difference in nation-building.

Similarly, Mr. Shola Abioye, Kwara State Coordinator of CNNPF, lauded Senator Tinubu for the humanitarian gesture. “This act ensures that widows have a sense of belonging and can celebrate in happiness. Many of the beneficiaries have lost their breadwinners and struggle daily to make ends meet,” he said.

Mrs. Esther Ogundunmade and Ranti Adelo, two widows who benefited from the programme, expressed their gratitude to the First Lady and prayed for the success of the Tinubu administration.

The Kwara State representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Mr. Abel Ashafa, also commended Senator Tinubu, describing the initiative as a step toward alleviating the plight of vulnerable Nigerians.

He prayed for wisdom and guidance for the Tinubu administration to deliver on its promises to the nation.

The beneficiaries called on the government to continue implementing measures that would ease the economic hardships faced by Nigerians.
