From David Onuoja, Abuja
The Federal and Lagos State Governments have agreed to work in synergy to deliver stable and reliable electricity to the Lagos corridor, as part of the 24/7 Energy Zones pilot approved by President Bola Tinubu.
This agreement was reached at a high-level technical session at Lagos House, Marina, between Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The pilot will start in Lagos and extend to the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors to scale across major commercial hubs.
According to the Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, who represented the Federal Government, said, the Ministry has secured commitments from Distribution Companies to offtake more power and deliver steady supply along the Lagos corridor. He said the Ministry will work with Lagos on four priority areas approved by the President: grid stabilisation, market liquidity, grid expansion, and governance and regulatory harmonization.
In his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the Minister for showing willingness and capacity to resolve lingering issues in the sector. He said Lagos is committed to pragmatic solutions that will create a bankable, collaborative and competitive electricity market for Lagosians.
To move from commitment to delivery, the Minister announced a Joint Technical Committee chaired by the Managing Director of NISO and co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Energy, with members from NERC, TCN, REA, LASERC, LAISO and LSEA. The committee will report to a Steering Committee chaired by the Governor and co-chaired by the Minister.
