Embrace emerging Technologies in Healthcare – Prof Okesina

Prof. Adekunle Okesina, former Chairman of the National Committee of Provosts of College of Health Sciences, has called on Nigerian medical practitioners to adopt emerging technologies, especially local innovations, to overcome challenges in patient management.

Speaking in Ilorin during his retirement and 70th birthday celebration, Prof. Okesina emphasized the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals.

He highlighted the need for cross-fertilization of ideas, stating that the exchange of knowledge and expertise is crucial in advancing patient care.

“The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medical practice is key to solving some of the challenges in patient management in Nigeria,” he said.

Okesina, a renowned Chemical Pathologist and former lecturer at the University of Ilorin, added that interdisciplinary collaboration among doctors could lead to significant improvements in medical practice, fostering innovation and breakthroughs in research.

At the event, Prof. Simeon Adebisi, Immediate Past Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Benue State University, delivered a lecture on the roles of Chemical Pathologists in patient care.

He stressed the importance of embracing modern technologies and the multidisciplinary approach in healthcare, noting that different medical specialties must work together for the best patient outcomes.

Prof. John Obafunwa, Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), praised Prof. Okesina as a brilliant and humble figure in the medical community, wishing him continued success in his future endeavors.
