The Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON), has intensified its engagement with the National Assembly over the ongoing amendment of Nigeria’s Electoral Act.

This was contained in a statement issued by Public Relations Officer, Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC), Modupe Adegboro.

According to the statement, the National Chairman of FOSIECON, Hon. Mamman Nda-Eri, led a high-level delegation to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, to discuss key issues surrounding the proposed reforms.

Members of the delegation included the Chairman of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, Hon. Plangji Daniel, and the Chairman of the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission, Barr. Ayuba Usman.

The meeting focused on proposed amendments aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system, with particular attention to elections conducted at the state and local government levels.

FOSIECON used the opportunity to present the concerns, experiences, and operational challenges of State Independent Electoral Commissions and stressed the need for these realities to be reflected in the amended law.

According to FOSIECON, the visit forms part of its wider strategy of sustained advocacy and constructive engagement with lawmakers to support credible, transparent, and well-managed elections across the country.

The engagement comes at a critical period, as the National Assembly is currently reviewing the Electoral Act 2022 and lawmakers are working towards the passage of an Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill ahead of the 2026/2027 electoral cycle.
