From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has called for a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s educational system, emphasizing its role in nurturing democratic values and shaping the future of the nation.

Fagbemi made this appeal in his lecture at the University of Ilorin’s 39th convocation ceremony on Friday.

His lecture titled: Nurturing Democratic Values and Education for the Future of Nigeria, Fagbemi stressed that Nigeria’s education system must be restructured to instill core democratic principles.

According to him, “Nigeria’s educational system must be overhauled in such a way to imbue in us the democratic values of tolerance, respect for others, and for the Rule of Law.”

The AGF highlighted the need for citizens to view democracy as a system driven by engagement, transparency, and collaboration. He noted, “Nigeria’s educational system must reorient citizens to understand that democracy is synonymous with engagement, transparency, and collaboration.”

Fagbemi, further emphasised that reforms must focus on transforming the mindset of Nigerians, urging that education should foster openness to different aspects of life, such as society, history, and truth.

He expressed concern that the current system might not be equipped to handle these challenges. “It is doubtful whether our current educational system can adequately address these tasks,” he added.

He also called on Nigerians to reject violence, stating that democracy is an ongoing process that requires continuous nurturing through an inclusive and equitable educational framework. “The future of Nigeria requires strong democratic values nurtured through an inclusive, just, and equitable educational system,” he said.

Fagbemi urged the graduating students to apply their knowledge for the betterment of society, encouraging them to be champions of democracy and advocates of a united Nigeria. “I implore you to use your knowledge and skills for the good of society, take initiative, think creatively, advance the social good, and eschew evil and all appearances of evil,” he charged.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), underscored the importance of education in a democratic society. He stated, “No education, no nation,” adding that educated citizens are crucial for holding leaders accountable and promoting integrity and accountability.

As the convocation marked the end of an academic journey for the graduates, both Fagbemi and Egbewole reminded them of their responsibility to contribute positively to Nigeria’s development.
