The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Aliyu Umar Yusuf, has called for unity, peace and tolerance among citizens of the State as the global Christian community celebrate Christmas.
This is contained in a Press statement made available to the media by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Yabagi Mohammed.
The Speaker said in the statement that Kogi State, being the most peaceful in Nigeria owes that title to the government and the cooperation of the citizens, noting that the season of celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, should be a time for every Christian and non – Christians to extend their hands of love to one another.
The statement further quoted the Speaker to have said this sacred season reminds everyone of the virtues Jesus Christ exemplified, which includes love, humility, forgiveness, and peaceful coexistence.
“His teachings compel all of us to embrace unity and tolerance, irrespective of our ethnic, religious, or political differences. It is only by coming together as one people that we can achieve the progress and prosperity we all desire for our dear state,” Rt Hon Umar stressed.
He added that at a time when challenges confront many people, they should let this Christmas serve as an opportunity for reflection and renewal.
He said as individuals and as a community, Kogi people should commit to living by the values of compassion, selflessness, and peace, which are central to Christmas season.
He quoted the book of Romans 12:18 in the Bible which says “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone,” and urged everyone to allow this divine injunction guide them in their relationships and interactions, as they work toward building a united, harmonious, and prosperous Kogi State.
“I also call on all citizens to extend kindness to the less privileged among us during this season of giving. Let us all share in the joy of Christmas by reaching out to those in need and bringing smiles to their faces.
“On behalf of members of the Kogi State House of Assembly, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. May the joy and peace of this season abide with us all, and may the New Year bring greater blessings to our families and to Kogi State.”
