From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin
A former presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has called on Christian youths in Nigeria to uphold integrity and actively seek leadership roles as a means of transforming the nation.
Speaking in Ilorin on Saturday at a one-day political education training, organised by the Kwara State chapter of the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Olawepo-Hashim said integrity remains the foundation for effective leadership.
“To become a good leader, your integrity matters most. Protect your integrity and be righteous,” he advised.
“Don’t compromise and always maintain a good name that will last for eternity. You must be accountable to the people and to God.”
The event, themed Arise and Lead: Answering the Call to Serve, brought together Christian youths from various backgrounds to explore their roles in nation-building and political leadership.
Olawepo-Hashim, encouraged young Christians to emulate Nigeria’s past leaders such as Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and Solomon Lar, who, he said, served the country without compromising their values.
He also referenced the biblical Daniel, saying, “They always came to Daniel because he had wisdom. If you have wisdom, people will seek your counsel.”
Also speaking, former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yissa Benjamin, urged Christian youths not to shy away from politics but instead take responsibility to lead with faith and integrity.
“You are called to be the light and the salt of the nation,” he said. “Influence your environment positively by being truthful and honest. Protect the image of Christ and of Nigeria.”
He emphasised that Christian youths should participate in politics, pray for leaders, care for the less privileged, and model peace and justice.
Kwara State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs Oloruntoyosi Thomas, who also addressed participants, urged women in politics to respect their homes while pursuing public service. According to her, “Being in politics is a call to serve and fight for integrity, not a bed of roses. But with trust in God, you will overcome the challenges.”
She praised men who support their wives in politics, describing them as deserving of honour.
The YOWICAN Chairman in Kwara, Evangelist Stephen Adeola-Awoyale, said the programme was designed to stir Christian youths into political action, urging church leaders to support their full inclusion.
“It’s time Christian youths stopped standing on the sidelines. They must arise and lead,” he said.
