Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State, paid a heartfelt tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes during the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Parade, honoring their ultimate sacrifice in service.
The ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Cenotaph of the First and Second World Wars in Lokoja, where the Governor laid flowers in a poignant gesture to commemorate the bravery and selflessness of Nigeria’s armed forces.
This solemn event, held annually on January 15th, commemorates the end of the Nigerian Civil War and pays respects to the country’s military personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
While addressing the press, Governor Ododo expressed his administration’s commitment to supporting the military and families of fallen heroes, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens and residents in the state.
The Governor underscored the significance of paying tribute to the courageous men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
He stressed that it is essential to honor their memory and ensure that their legacy endures, saying, “the work of the fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price to hold the country together will never be in vain. We owe it to them to keep their memory alive and continue their selfless work towards a better future,” the Governor said.
Governor Ododo praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their unwavering dedication to maintaining the country’s unity, safety, and security. He acknowledged their selfless efforts in protecting the nation and its citizens, ensuring a stable and secure environment for all.
He emphasised that the security and logistical support of the military remain a top priority, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the government and the armed forces to maintain peace and stability in the region.
While speaking, the Governor made a heartfelt promise to provide free health insurance to the widows of fallen heroes through the Kogi State Health Insurance Scheme. This gesture aims to alleviate the sufferings of these widows and their children as they navigate life’s challenges.
Governor Ododo expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his efforts in tackling the country’s persistent security challenges.
He urged all well-meaning citizens to take responsibility for supporting the welfare of aging servicemen and women, as well as the families of fallen heroes. He stated the importance of coming together to improve their quality of life and show appreciation for their sacrifices.
The occasion reached its climax with a series of poignant and symbolic events. Governor Ododo reviewed the parade, paying respects to the nation’s armed forces. He then laid a wreath to honor the fallen heroes, followed by signing the condolence register.
As a symbol of peace, pigeons were released into the air. The ceremony also included a moment of somber reflection, as a minute of silence was observed and the Last Post was sounded, paying tribute to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Dignitaries present at the occasion include: the Secretary to State Government, Dr. Folashade Ayaode Arike, Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Josiah Majebi; members of the State Executive Council, Ohinoyi of Ebiraland His Royal Majesty Mohammed Tijani Anaje, Ohimege of Koton Kafi.
Others were the Commander 12 Brigade Nigerian Army Brig. -Gen. Fadaro; Commander Nigerian Navy Ship Lugard Lake, Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha; and Heads of other Security Agencies, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Civil Society, Academias, troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army, members of the state Legion, the press, among others.
