*Labour demands more action on welfare
From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has restated his administration’s resolve to transform Kwara into a self-reliant and economically vibrant state, calling on workers to continue backing the government’s development agenda.
The governor made this known through his Senior Advisor and Counselor, Saadu Salahu, at the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Kwara State Stadium Complex in Ilorin.
He commended the resilience and commitment of workers across all sectors, noting that their contributions remain central to the state’s progress.
“This day is dedicated to celebrating your strength, loyalty, and hard work, Your resilience and skill remain the pillars of our development. We are building a Kwara where workers thrive, jobs are created, and every sector contributes meaningfully to growth”, he said
AbdulRazaq highlighted achievements including consistent salary payments, support for entrepreneurs, and expansion of social safety programmes, which he described as essential steps toward sustainable development. He also encouraged workers to embrace innovation in the face of technological changes.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all workers for your role in our shared journey. While we may not always agree, our common goal remains a better Kwara,” he added, assuring workers that his administration remains open to dialogue and committed to their welfare.
Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Yakubu Salihu, also praised workers, describing them as the engine room of governance. “On behalf of the House, I say thank you for your dedication. We are committed to doing our part in supporting your needs,” he said.
However, labour leaders used the occasion to demand more concrete actions from the government. Kwara NLC Chairman, Comrade Saheed Olayinka, said while the government deserves commendation for regular salary payments, workers continue to grapple with rising inflation, inadequate housing, and job insecurity.
“Life has become increasingly difficult for the average worker,” he said. “We urge government at all levels to implement policies that will address inflation, improve healthcare access, support local industries, and reduce transportation costs.”
He also called for the recognition of qualified local government workers as permanent secretaries and stronger social protection measures to support vulnerable workers.
The State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Abdulrahman Onikijipa, proposed the creation of low-cost housing estates for civil servants and a 35 percent salary subsidy allowance to cushion the effects of the economic crisis. He further urged the immediate implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage percentage allowance for pensioners.
The event drew top government officials, labour leaders, and dignitaries, including former NNPC board member Ibrahim Mohammed Ghali. As celebrations ended, workers left with renewed calls for fairness and reforms to improve their quality of life.
