*Unfortunate situation requires collective effort- Fintiri
From Joseph Adahnu, Yola
The recent flooding in Yola South, Adamawa State, has been described as one of those unfortunate events that requires the collective efforts of all, and not a time for blame games
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, stated this in a statement signed by the Hon. Commissioner for Information and Strategy Adamawa State, Hon. James Iliya.
According to him, it is a fact that flooding occurs everywhere, even in the most advanced countries of the world. “The recent flooding in Yola South, Adamawa State, he said, is one of those unfortunate events that requires the collective efforts of all, and not a time for blame games.”
He noted that, Adamawa State Government had been proactive in educating residents of flood-prone areas, the risks and necessary precautions even before the recent flooding in Yola that resulted in loss of lives and property. This effort demonstrates the Government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens.
Fintiri cited that Government agencies like NEMA, NEDC, the Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the Bayelsa State Government, and BUA Group, were among those who contributed items and monetary assistance to the victims through the State Government.
This development has been commended by the Government as a move to help cushion the effects of the flooding. Their selfless efforts helped alleviate the suffering of the victims and facilitated the response efforts.
He described the situation as unfortunate incident that happened while people were sleeping, forcing victims who were caught unawares to immediately leave their homes for safe haven.
The Deputy Governor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, was the first government official to reach the flood victims and mobilize rescue operations. She identified a camp at a secondary school for victims and ensured that relief efforts were promptly initiated. Her swift response and leadership played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of the disaster.
The Government immediately intervened by profiling victims for support and distributing relief items to those affected. This effort helped provide essential necessities to the victims and demonstrated the Government’s commitment to their well-being. Though a natural disaster, the Government regrets the loss of lives and property resulting from the flooding, he said.
“Our hearts goes out to the victims and their families, who have been affected by this disaster. We acknowledge the plight of those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods,” Governor Fintiri said.
To ensure effective and efficient distribution of relief assistance, the Government will henceforth profile those coming forward to assist with relief efforts. This measure aims to prevent issues related to expired items and ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most.
The Adamawa State Government assures its citizens that it will not abandon its responsibility to protect and serve the people. “We will continue to work tirelessly to address the needs of our citizens, particularly in times of crisis. We appreciate the support of individuals, organizations, and agencies that have contributed to the relief efforts and urge everyone to continue working together to rebuild and recover from this disaster.
“The Government remains committed to its mandate and will continue to prioritise the safety, well-being, and prosperity of the people who elected us. We will not rest until every citizen has access to the necessary support and services to thrive”, he stated.
