From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Four police officers attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Kwara State Command are currently in detention following allegations of extortion involving a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa.

The officers reportedly stopped the student, Taiwo Kayode Taye, in Erin-Ile while he was en route to Osogbo, Osun State.

He was allegedly taken to Ijagbo Police Division and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), in Ilorin. There, he was reportedly coerced into unlocking his mobile phone and made to transfer N200,000 to an account bearing the name Lucy Akor.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, ordered the arrest of the officers involved and assured that disciplinary action is underway.

“I have directed a thorough investigation and the affected officers have already been detained at ‘A’ Division in Ilorin,” the Commissioner confirmed in Ilorin on Thursday.

He condemned the act, describing it as unprofessional and unacceptable.

“The conduct of those officers is a clear violation of the ethics of the Nigeria Police. They will not go unpunished,” he stated.

The case has drawn public attention, with many residents and students demanding accountability and justice for the victim. The police command has promised to update the public as investigations progress.
