The Kwara State Government has taken a major step toward transforming its transport sector with the establishment of a full-fledged Ministry of Transportation, aimed at introducing digital innovation, enhancing safety, and improving mobility for residents.
Speaking at the Quarterly Inter-Ministerial Press Briefing in Ilorin, the newly appointed Commissioner for Transportation, Alhaji Lafia Kora, said the creation of the ministry was a deliberate move by the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq-led administration, to address longstanding inefficiencies and introduce structure into the transport system.
“This ministry was established to bring about standardisation, efficiency, and safety in the transport sector,” the Commissioner said.
“Our goal is to build a sustainable, tech-driven system that benefits everyone.”

Since its official take-off on February 26, 2025, the ministry has begun operating five key directorates, including Project Planning, Research and Statistics; Mechanical and Duty Services; Transport Planning and Coordination; Road, Rail and Waterways; and Partner Financial Supply.
It also oversees agencies such as the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority and the Vehicle Inspection Unit.
While currently operating from a temporary site within the Ministry of Water Resources complex in Ilorin, the commissioner said all units are already functional and focused on enforcing traffic laws, improving urban mobility, and ensuring coordination across the transport sector.
In its efforts to reform the sector, the ministry has begun consultations with major transport unions including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN).
“We’re not only reforming the system but also building trust and collaboration with those who operate within it,” Sabi said.
He also revealed plans to deploy smart technologies, such as automated vehicle inspections, real-time monitoring systems, and the introduction of electric-powered tricycles and vehicles in the state.
“Our vision is to reduce stress, enhance revenue, and make our roads safer,” he said. “Every garage in Kwara will eventually have digital systems to capture the activities of all operators and commuters.”
The commissioner added that the ministry is working towards installing traffic lights at major intersections and building a comprehensive transport database to support data-driven decisions.
“Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s administration has consistently emphasised modernization in governance, and the transport reform is seen as one more step in his broader push for infrastructure and service delivery.
“This is only the beginning,” he affirmed. “We are determined to create a smart and efficient transportation network that truly serves the people of Kwara.”
