In a move to bolster local governance in Kogi State, Auditor General for Local Government, Hon. Yakubu Adabenege Siyaka, has encouraged newly elected Local Government Chairmen to adopt a robust framework of financial transparency and integrity.

His message, delivered in Lokoja, aligns with Kogi State’s recent adoption of local government autonomy, a significant milestone allowing leaders at the third tier of government, control over finances and decisions.

During his address, Adabenege, emphasised the power of autonomy as a means to drive grassroots development. But, he noted, with this increased independence comes a heightened need for fiscal responsibility.

Urging local leaders to set a standard in managing public funds, he pointed to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s dedication to accountability and good governance as a model for them to follow.

“Autonomy is only as effective as those who manage it,” Hon. Adabenege remarked, adding that efficient, transparent use of funds could elevate each local government area’s impact on residents’ lives.

His call to action included a push for meticulous record-keeping and adherence to financial guidelines, both of which are essential in a system where local leaders are increasingly accountable to the communities they serve.

Hon. Olokun Tosin, Chairman of Yagba East and head of Kogi’s ALGON chapter, responded positively to the Auditor General’s message, acknowledging the need for rigorous financial practices to ensure meaningful development. “Our people deserve to see results from this autonomy,” he stated, pledging to align with the transparency goals outlined in the meeting.

Contributing, Aliyu Musa, Director of Local Government for Lokoja and leader of Kogi’s association of DLGs and Treasurers, praised Hon. Adabenege’s commitment to supporting local officials. He reflected that this approach was a promising step toward building local governments that reflect the needs and aspirations of the Kogi people.

As Kogi State embarks on this new chapter of empowered local governance, Hon. Adabenege’s proactive approach to ensuring transparency and fiscal responsibility among leaders underscores the state’s commitment to growth and accountability at every level.

His message signals a future in which Kogi’s local governments, newly autonomous and fully accountable, can serve as pillars of effective governance for their communities.
