From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Three dismissed police officers from the Kwara State Police Command have been arraigned in court for alleged criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

The officers, connected to the killing of a student, Abdulqoyyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, face two charges: conspiracy and culpable homicide.

This development was confirmed in a statement signed by DSP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, and made available to newsmen in Ilorin on Friday. According to the statement, the accused officers have been remanded in prison custody pending further court proceedings.

It would be recalled that the officers were dismissed from service after the police command’s internal investigation found them guilty of improper conduct leading to the death of the late Ishola, a National Diploma student of Electronic Engineering at the Kwara State Polytechnic.

Ishola was killed on September 4, 2024, in the GRA area of Ilorin, while preparing for his sign-out ceremony.

Following the incident, the students’ union and the institution’s management called for justice.

In response, the Kwara Police Command confirmed the dismissal of the officers, identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip. The officers were charged with leaving their beat, engaging in corrupt practices, and unlawfully exercising authority.

The statement emphasised the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun’s commitment to accountability within the force, stating that any officer found guilty of misconduct, especially in cases involving loss of life, would face severe consequences.

The Kwara State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya, extended condolences to Ishola’s family and assured the public that justice would prevail.

The Command also appreciated the patience and cooperation of the citizens, reaffirming its dedication to maintaining law and order.
