From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar, a renowned expert in Exercise Science and Sports Psychology at Kwara State University (KWASU), has issued a warning against the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle.

He emphasized the importance of regular physical exercise as a preventive and therapeutic measure for various health conditions.

Speaking during the 15th Inaugural Lecture at KWASU in Malete, titled “Man’s Limitation of Himself Against the Potentials and Gifts from His Creator: A Psychological Perspective,” Prof. Abubakar highlighted the critical role of exercise in maintaining mental and physical health.

He noted that regular physical activity can help prevent cognitive decline, neurodegenerative diseases, and reduce the risk of ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, colon cancer, joint swelling, and arthritis.

He pointed out that the average life expectancy in Nigeria is between 45-55 years, partly due to stress and the prevalent sedentary lifestyle.

Prof. Abubakar urged Nigerians to incorporate at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity into their daily routines to improve overall health and facilitate weight control, especially among children and adolescents.

“Physical activity is essential for improving health and combating obesity, high blood pressure, and other physical disorders,” Prof. Abubakar stated.

He observed that technological advancements, such as the use of remote controls, escalators, and lifts, have significantly reduced daily physical exertion, contributing to the rise in sedentary behavior.

Prof. Abubakar also called on leaders of organizations to incorporate short breaks for stretching or light walking during meetings that last more than two hours to combat inactivity.

Additionally, he encouraged tertiary institutions to promote student participation in sports, highlighting its numerous benefits, including serving as an alternative to medication.
