From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has said that, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has no plan to increase any electricity tarrifs, putting to rest the rumours circulating in some media outfits that electricity tarrifs will soon be increased.

The minister made the revelation during his media chat with Power Correspondents Association of Nigeria (PCAN), in Abuja Monday, while marking his 100 days in office as a minister of power.

He said, he has heard in some quarters that this administration is planning to increase  electricity tarrif, “I am not just speaking as a politician but assuring Nigerans that there will be no new tarrifs for now”.

According to him, “there were many challenges before my taking over but thank God, by his grace, things have began to reshape itself gradually and positively.

“That is why I characterise these first three months as a period of diagnosis and stabilisation. We have concentrated on repairing existing platforms, recovering stranded assets and restoring discipline. We can only build enduring new structures on foundations capable of supporting them. Stabilisation is the essential first stage of expansion.

“Our programme rests on three pillars: stabilising the value restoring market discipline and strengthening governance. Together, they connect engineering decisions to financial sustainability and public accountability”, he said.

Giving his 100 days in office scorecard, he said, “Under the first pillar, the 375 MW Alaoji open-cycle power plant, was restored to the national grid after three years offline. A number of substations have been upgupgrade. New transformers have been commissioned at Apapa, Ijora, Alausa and Lekki in Lagos unlocking 672MW of transmission capacity, while a new 300 MVA transformer has been energised at Katampe in Abuja, unlocking another 240MW of transmission capacity. These interventions restored existing assets and strengthened the network serving major centres of demand.

“Operational record reports show generation and transmission above 5,000 MW over the past couple of weeks, compared to the 3,700 to 4,700 MW range before June, and a generation peak of 5,330 MW during August and September.

“Administrative bottlenecks have received similar attention. Working with relevant agencies of government, we are securing the release of long-delayed power equipment from the ports. The next task is to inspect, deploy and install the equipment. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), unlocked more than 300 containers through this effort, containing critical network equipment required to upgrade the transmission infrastructure. Releasing these equipment makes it available for deployment and helps address the paradox of unfinished projects alongside equipment stranded in storage.

“Diversification is another part of stabilisation. Through the Rural Electrification Agency and its partners, we are reaching people beyond the existing grid. The completed electrification portfolio comprises 62 solar and mini-grid installations across 30 states, representing about 43.6 MW of installed solar capacity and 41,735 new connections, with 4  estimated beneficiary reach of more than 208,000 people.

“It brings together Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) Project, the Africa Mini-Grids Programme, Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS) and institutional electrification. These are practical additions to access for communities and public institutions.

“For the first time in our history as a nation, we launched the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO), to drive the long-term sustainability and value of renewable energy assets and infrastructure in Nigeria.

“RAMCO will professionally manage publicly financed renewable energy assets, contracting competent operators responsible for metering, billing and collecting payments, as well as maintaining the infrastructure. RAMCO aims to raise N3 Trillion Naira over the coming years, assuring long term investments and viability of public renewable energy assets.

“We have raised an estimated 1.23 trillion naira towards settling the backlog of power-sector debt. This is a significant financing milestone. It forms part of the wider programme for addressing the 3.3 trillion naira in sector debt. This is expected to improve sector liquidity.

“We have also blocked revenue leakage from Industrial-corridor interventions for energy theft and revenue losses assessed at approximately 120 billion naira annually along the Ikorodu-Sagamu corridor. This is good for sector liquidity and revenue protection. Better billing, collection and remittance will help preserve resources needed for reliable electricity.

“Approximately 350,000 meters were installed during the first 100 days. Programme records show cumulative installations of 1,004,260 as at August 2026. Resolution of the AMMON litigation unlocked procurement of about 1.4 million smart meters across the affected programmes. Metering of military formations is progressing, with 90,000 installations recorded. These developments advance an existing national effort to replace disputed estimates with measured consumption and improve revenue accountability”, he explained.

Tegbe after enumerating his achievements in the last 100 days, equally called on the journalists especially PCAN, to help sensitize Nigerians on the activities of the ministry.

Tegbe took over the mantle of leadership in the power sector from his predecessor, Adebayo Adelabu, on the 8th June, 2026.
