The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, is attending a Seminar on the recently passed Tax Reform Act and the proposed State Police Bill in Lagos.

While the tax reform focus on fiscal federalism, there are concurrent national discussions regarding the establishment of state police to improve localized security.

The state police bill seeks to decentralise the police force, allowing states to establish their own security agencies to tackle kidnapping, banditry, and other security challenges more effectively.

Proponents argue that local knowledge and quick response times are crucial, which the current centralised police system often struggles to provide.

The bill is undergoing legislative processes to amend the constitution to move policing from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list.

Nigeria is undergoing significant structural shifts, with the 2025 Tax Reform Acts taking full effect on January 1, 2026, and the State Police Bill moving toward final passage by the end of the year.

The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly has always maintained that State Police Law is long overdue and that there is the need for its adoption in states of the federation to allow the federating units of the country have greater roles in the security of lives and property in view of the current security threats in Nigeria.
