INEC may reconsider 2027 Election dates over Muslim’s Ramadan period coincidence

From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said, it may reconsider the already given dates for 2027 general elections as announced due to the public outcry over the recently released timetable for the 2027 General Election, citing compliance with the Constitution and Electoral Act.

The Commission fixed February 20, 2027, for Presidential and National Assembly Elections, and March 6, 2027, for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections, following existing regulations.

However, INEC acknowledges stakeholder concerns about the dates coinciding with national holidays and observances such as Muslim Ramadan coincidence, is consulting to address these issues. The Commission may seek legislative intervention to adjust the dates while ensuring constitutional and statutory requirements are met.

INEC emphasised on its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and credible elections. Saying, the public will be informed of any development; adding that the Commission fixed the dates in accordance with the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022.

The regulations state that Presidential and National Assembly elections should hold on the third Saturday of February, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections should hold two weeks later. INEC assures the public that it remains sensitive to legitimate concerns impacting electoral participation and conduct.

The Commission’s clarification comes amidst stakeholders concerns about the scheduled dates. Notwithstanding, INEC’s National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to credible elections.

INEC will inform the public of any changes to the election dates, ensuring consistency with constitutional and statutory requirements. Saying the Commission’s goal is to ensure transparent and inclusive elections in 2027.
