From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Ilorin Emirate was awash with grief as thousands of Muslims thronged the palace forecourt of the Emir of Ilorin to bid farewell to the late Chief Imam, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Soliu, who also served as Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Ulamah.

The funeral prayer, led by Imam Imale of Ilorin, Sheikh Abdullahi Abdulhameed, marked the culmination of decades of spiritual leadership and service to the community. The massive turnout tested the limits of security personnel, who worked tirelessly to manage the sea of mourners.

Islamic scholars, traditional leaders, and government officials eulogised the late cleric, praising his dedication to Islamic scholarship and his role in promoting peace and unity. “Sheikh Bashir Soliu was more than a religious leader; he was a guiding light whose wisdom touched every corner of our state,” said Alhaji Ibrahim Lawal, a traditional ruler in Kwara.

Born and raised in Ilorin, Sheikh Soliu, devoted his life to teaching and mentoring generations of Muslims, earning respect for his deep understanding of Islamic teachings. Appointed the 12th Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate in 1983, he led the community with distinction for over 40 years, advocating for tolerance and harmony among Muslims and the broader society.

Sheikh Soliu passed away on Monday at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge, leadership, and unwavering commitment to faith. Many described his life as a model of service and piety that will continue to inspire generations.

“The Ilorin Emirate has lost a father, a teacher, and a symbol of unity,” said Sheikh Abdulhameed during the janazah prayers. “We pray Allah grants him the highest ranks in Jannah and grants us the strength to continue his mission of peace.”

The late Chief Imam’s contributions to Islamic education and community development will be remembered across Kwara State and beyond.
