The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has explained Labour Party’s exclusion from the 2026 FCT Area Council Election, scheduled for February 21st.

According to INEC, Labour Party has been embroiled in internal leadership disputes since 2024, with the Supreme Court ruling in April 2025 that the tenure of Barr. Julius Abure-led National Executive Committee had expired.

Despite this, the Abure-led faction conducted primaries for the election, leading to multiple court cases against INEC; the Commission explained

INEC further stated that there is currently no court order compelling it to issue access codes to Labour Party candidates, as the interim order obtained by the party lapsed on December 23, 2025.

It therefore, reiterated its commitment to upholding the Constitution, Electoral Act, and Rule of Law, and will await the final determination of pending cases.
