*calls for prayers for Nigeria

By Joy Salami

Alhaji Umar Oricha, Director General of Government House Administration, marked his 65th birthday by visiting the Ministry of Mercy Orphanage Home in Lokoja, urging Nigerians to pray for the country and its leaders instead of condemning them.

This gesture coincided with Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, celebrated on October 1, 2025.

Oricha emphasised that Nigeria’s challenges are part of a growth process, and condemning the nation only deepens despair.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria has the potential to become a developed country with the right support and prayers.

While acknowledging that some government policies may be uncomfortable, he likened them to a painful surgery that eventually brings healing.

The DG, noted that his birthday was not just a celebration but an opportunity to thank God for life and to remind Nigerians of the need for self-development. “If I have been able to develop myself and contribute to Nigeria, then every Nigerian can do the same. Together, through selflessness and positivity, we can build the country of our dreams,” he added.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Head of Service (HOS), Dr. Elijah Evidime, who described the celebrant as a mentor, elder brother, and benefactor, paid glowing tribute to Oricha’s contributions to the state and to individuals. He highlighted the coincidence of the DG’s birthday with Nigeria’s Independence Day, saying both milestones symbolized resilience and hope.

“Today is a beautiful day that we are here to celebrate one of our own. I call him my elder brother who has touched the lives of many, including myself. Coincidentally, Nigeria is 65 today and he is celebrating 65 as well. He has been a calm, supportive, and exemplary leader, and my prayer is for God to grant him long life, good health, and more years of service, Dr. Evidime said.

On Nigeria’s development, the HOS noted that despite current challenges, there were visible improvements such as gradual drop in food prices and ongoing economic reforms.

He urged Nigerians to be patient, remain hopeful, and contribute their quota rather than waiting for the government alone. “Other developed countries were built by their own people. We too must join hands together and develop Nigeria and Kogi State. Civil servants, in particular, must reciprocate the government’s goodwill with dedication and loyalty,” he added.

Also speaking, the Director General, Protocol, Alhaji Sulieman Ibrahim, commended Alhaji Oricha’s decision to celebrate with orphans rather than hold a lavish personal party, describing it as a reflection of selfless leadership. He noted that the gesture will not only uplift the children but also send a strong message of compassion and responsibility.

According to him, “True leadership is not measured only by positions we hold, but by the lives we touch. The DG has demonstrated today that service is about people, and his humility remains an example to follow.”

Highlights of the celebration includ prayers for the celebrant, words of encouragement to the children, presentation of food items and gifts to the Ministry of Mercy Orphanage Home, and the symbolic cutting of birthday cake with the children.

The management of the orphanage expressed heartfelt appreciation to the DG and his entourage, describing the gesture as impactful and timely.
