Kogi State has been selected by the World Bank as one of the five implementing states to host the prestigious Livestock Service Centre (LSC), under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).
The announcement was made by the Kogi L-PRES Project Coordinator, Dr. Olufemi Bolarin, in a statement released in Lokoja.
According to Bolarin, the LSC is a flagship initiative supported by the World Bank to enhance livestock production and promote economic growth.
He revealed that the selection of Kogi followed a rigorous evaluation process led by the National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Sanusi Abubakar.
“Kogi State met the stringent criteria required, including the availability of adequate land, a strategic location, a detailed design, and a sound management framework,” Bolarin stated.
He added that the state’s established livestock trade structure and its potential for modern feedlotting, processing, and marketing facilities also played a significant role in the decision.
The LSC, to be located near the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara, is expected to transform livestock production in Kogi State and beyond.
Bolarin described it as a groundbreaking project poised to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance food security.
“This centre will position Kogi as a leader in Nigeria’s livestock sector, offering comprehensive services that boost productivity and promote sustainable practices,” he said.
Among the planned structures are a state-of-the-art animal reference and diagnostic hospital, a modern automated poultry production system, an artificial insemination centre, and facilities for breeding and ruminant production.
Bolarin emphasised the transformative impact of the project, noting that it would serve as a hub for innovation, development, and training in the livestock industry.
He praised Governor Ahmed Ododo, for his visionary leadership and unwavering support, which he said had been instrumental in achieving this milestone.
“Governor Ododo’s commitment to advancing agricultural development has paved the way for this remarkable achievement. The LSC will not only benefit Kogi State but will also contribute to the nation’s economic growth and food security,” Bolarin concluded.
