From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), has called for continued support as the institution gears up for its 50th-anniversary celebrations.

Speaking during the 2025 Iftar/Media Interactive session at the VC’s Lodge, in Ilorin, Kwar State, he outlined key events planned for the golden jubilee while reaffirming the university’s commitment to excellence and inclusivity.

“2025 is significant for us because it marks our golden anniversary, and we have lined up various activities throughout the year to celebrate this milestone,” Egbewole said.

“We began with a conference in January, and by July, we hope to unveil the University Ambassador and confer awards of excellence on distinguished alumni. The main anniversary celebrations will take place from November 23 to 28, by the grace of God.”

He emphasised the university’s longstanding reputation for academic excellence, noting that the institution remains committed to its Vision 10500, a strategic plan aimed at strengthening its global standing.

Reflecting on recent milestones, the VC, highlighted the successful hosting of the 39th convocation ceremony and the inauguration of a new Governing Council.

He also underscored Unilorin’s dedication to religious harmony, stating, “Our university is unique in the way it accommodates all religions. We celebrate Christmas with our Christian brothers and sisters and Ileya with our Muslim faithful.”

Egbewole stressed the significance of Ramadan in fostering faith, unity, and communal responsibility, adding that this year’s Iftar engagement extended beyond the media to include interactions with Muslim groups, university administrators, and members of the wider university community.

On security, he reiterated Unilorin’s zero tolerance for cultism, boasting of over two decades without recorded cult activities.

“We have a robust security structure, responsible student leadership, and a dynamic approach to maintaining peace on campus,” he stated.

Addressing national issues, Egbewole commented on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, saying that constitutional amendments are necessary to prevent similar occurrences. “As academics, we take an objective stance. Our Faculty of Law recently held a roundtable discussion on the Rivers situation, and our position remains based on research, not political sentiments.”

The VC also reaffirmed Unilorin’s commitment to internationalisation, revealing that the institution has over 100 memoranda of understanding (MoUs), with universities across the world.

“We have strengthened our admissions processes, energised our Centre for International Education, and on April 14-16, we will host an international conference as part of our 50th-anniversary celebrations,” he announced.

Egbewole urged stakeholders, including the media, alumni, and the public, to support the university’s golden jubilee celebrations and its broader vision for academic excellence.
