Tragedy as road crash claim lives of five UNIOSUN students

The Osun State University (UNIOSUN) community, has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of five students in a fatal road accident along the Ife-Ibadan Expressway.

The accident, which occurred in the Balogun area of Ikire, was confirmed by the university’s spokesperson, Ademola Adesoji, in a statement on Monday.

According to reports from the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the collision involved an 18-passenger bus traveling from Osogbo and another vehicle coming from Ibadan.

“Our university management, upon receiving this distressing news, swiftly dispatched a team to the scene to identify and support our students who were involved in the accident. Regrettably, we confirmed the loss of five of our dear students,” Adesoji stated.

The deceased students were identified as Olagbemide Dotun, a 200-level Software Engineering student; Suleiman Farouq Adedayo, a 400-level Law student; Ogundare Pelumi, a 300-level Public Health student; Ogundare Elijah, a 100-level Mechanical Engineering student; and Olawuyi Mary, a 200-level Nursing student.

Another student, Olagbemide Damilola, a 200-level Medicine and Surgery student, survived the crash and is currently receiving medical attention. The police confirmed a total of 10 fatalities from the accident.

“This tragic loss has deeply shaken our university community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the deceased. We urge our students, staff, and the entire university community to remain calm and supportive during this difficult time,” the university added.

As the university mourns, the management assured that they would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates where necessary. Families of the victims have been urged to take solace in the memories of their loved ones while the university pledged to offer necessary support.
