Tinubu tasks youths on nation building at UNILORIN’s 39th Convocation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has reiterated Federal Government’s dedication to improving the educational sector and empowering Nigerian youths.

Even as he has called on graduates to take active roles in addressing the nation’s challenges.

Tinubu made these remarks during the 39th Convocation Ceremony of University of Ilorin.

Represented by the Minister of State for Education, Hon. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Tinubu congratulated the graduating students on their academic achievements and urged them to contribute positively to Nigeria’s development.

“As you step into the real world, the onus is on you to contribute your quota to the greatness of this country. Remember that your existence will only be meaningful if you make positive impacts,” he said.

He acknowledged the economic and security challenges currently facing the country but expressed optimism about Nigeria’s resilience.

The president encouraged youths to embrace leadership roles, highlighting their intelligence, courage, and integrity as tools to navigate Nigeria’s pressing issues.

Tinubu also outlined the government’s initiatives to support students, particularly through the Nigerian Education Loans Fund (NELFUND), designed to provide financial aid for students.

“The Nigerian Education Loans Fund (NELFUND) has come to stay to provide opportunities and access for students to learn with ease and pay back later,” he stated, urging students to take full advantage of the scheme.

The President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to an uninterrupted academic calendar, calling for peaceful dialogue between academic staff and the government to resolve issues.

He further revealed that recent waivers had been granted to universities to address staffing shortages by recruiting more personnel.

In his address, the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Surv. Abiodun Aluko, lauded the institution for maintaining its status as the most sought-after university in Nigeria.

He also commended the establishment of NELFUND, describing it as a relief for students and families.

Aluko praised Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for infrastructural improvement around the university, notably the completion of a flyover bridge easing traffic in the area.

Governor AbdulRazaq, represented by the Executive Chairman of Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Shehu Raheem Adaramaja, urged the graduates to embrace innovation and contribute positively to the country.

“As you step into the wider world, I urge you to be drivers of positive change, innovators, and entrepreneurs,” AbdulRazaq said.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, acknowledged that UNILORIN has produced notable Nigerians who have contributed immensely to national development.

He encouraged the graduates to keep learning, unlearning, and relearning, as their education was a foundation for future global competition.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, stakeholders, parents, and traditional rulers, who celebrated the achievements of the graduates and the university.
