From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon as a petrol tanker accident claimed two lives along the Ilorin–Jebba Expressway in Kwara State.

The accident, which occurred around 3:43 pm at Pasa Village, involved a tanker with registration number NSR 966 ZQ carrying 33,000 litres of petrol. The vehicle reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and overturned, sparking a huge blaze.

Operatives of the Kwara State Fire Service, arrived at the scene swiftly to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to other road users. However, the driver and his motor boy died instantly in the crash.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed deep sympathy with the bereaved families. He warned tanker drivers and other motorists against reckless driving and neglect of safety measures on highways.

“Our men responded immediately and were able to stop the fire from escalating, but unfortunately, we lost two lives. This is a painful reminder that road safety must never be taken lightly,” he said.

Olumuyiwa advised drivers to avoid overspeeding, maintain their vehicles regularly, shun night travels, and take adequate rest to prevent fatigue. He also urged motorists to keep fire extinguishers in their vehicles and report emergencies without delay.
