In a bid to promote justice, protect fundamental rights and safeguard the interests of indigent and vulnerable persons, the Public Defender and Citizens Rights Commission (PDCRC), has sensitized officers of the Vehicle Inspection Service, on the fundamental rights of citizens, particularly road users.
A statement issued by the Information officer, Public Defender and Citizens Rights Commission, Sadiq Oyiza, revealed that the sensitization visit was aimed at reminding officers of their responsibilities when interacting with motorists and other road users, as they encounter people from different backgrounds in the course of carrying out their official duties.
Speaking during the visit, the Director-General of the Commission, Barrister Musa Idris, appreciated the management of the Vehicle Inspection Service for the warm reception accorded him and the team of senior legal officers.
The Director-General also expressed appreciation to Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for his commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of the people of Kogi State. He noted that the government’s support for the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights has contributed significantly to creating an environment where justice, peace and good governance can thrive.
Also speaking, the Deputy Director and Head of Criminal Litigation, Emmanuel Ibenu Esq, took participants through relevant provisions of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law (VAPP Law), highlighting some of the offences and penalties contained in the law.

He explained that the VAPP Law is an important legal framework designed to curb violence, protect vulnerable persons and check excesses in society.
Similarly, Innocent Adama, Esq., a Protection Officer and Senior Legal Officer, emphasized that the law was enacted to protect vulnerable members of society. He stated that the PDCRC has been empowered by the State Government to stand for justice and protect the rights of citizens irrespective of their status, position or background.
He urged the officers to always exercise their duties within the ambit of the law and to treat members of the public with respect and dignity while carrying out their responsibilities.
The sensitization visit ended with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which the officers sought clarification on various issues concerning citizens’ rights, law enforcement and the proper discharge of their duties.
The team comprised the Director-General, senior legal officers, protection officers and other members of staff of the Commission.
