Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has cautioned Nigerians against disclosing sensitive information about the movement of military personnel, saying such actions are aiding bandits and endangering national security.
The governor gave the warning on Tuesday while visiting three soldiers receiving treatment after a recent bandits’ ambush in the state. He said intelligence leaked by informants within communities often exposes troops to deadly attacks.
According to him, “militants are able to mount ambush for troops based on information they get from some members of the public. That is sabotage, and it must stop.”
AbdulRazaq, who described the actions as unpatriotic, stressed that security operatives are making huge sacrifices daily to keep the country safe and deserve the support of all citizens rather than betrayal.
During the visit, the governor was received by the Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Sobi, Brigadier General Nicholas Rume, alongside the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Abdullah Dasilva Yussuf.
He expressed deep sympathy to the families of three soldiers who lost their lives in the ambush and announced a donation of N20 million to each family, amounting to N60 million in total. He also approved N5 million for each of the three injured soldiers to support their treatment and welfare.
“We are here to visit the soldiers who were ambushed by bandits. Unfortunately, we lost three of them, while three are currently receiving treatment,” the governor said.
“What we can do is to pray for them and support the families of those who died. May their souls rest in peace. We appreciate their selfless service to the state, the federation, and the people of Nigeria.”
He added that the financial support for the bereaved families is a temporary intervention pending formal assistance from the appropriate authorities.
“For those who died, we will give their families N60 million as a stop-gap until the Ministry of Defence takes over their welfare as usual. Those in the hospital will receive N5 million each so their families can take care of them,” he said.
AbdulRazaq noted that the incident highlights the daily risks faced by security personnel, urging Nigerians to unite in the fight against banditry and terrorism.
“This shows the danger that security men go through every day. They are always in harm’s way to keep us safe. All hands must be on deck in this battle against banditry and terrorism,” he added.
