A Kwara State High Court, sitting in Ilorin, has ordered the remand of seven suspects linked to the murder of Mojisola Awesu, a student of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa.
The decision came on Monday after the absence of legal representation for some of the defendants stalled proceedings.
Justice Ibrahim Yusuf, presiding over the case, expressed displeasure over the repeated absence of counsel, particularly for the 5th, 6th, and 7th defendants. “This court will not condone delays that undermine the course of justice. All defendants must be adequately represented,” the judge ruled before ordering their remand until March 4, the next adjourned date.
Previously, only the prime suspects, Adebayo Joshua Happiness and Timileyin Kolawole, had been remanded following a court sitting on February 3. However, with the absence of legal representation continuing to hinder the case, Justice Yusuf ruled that all seven accused persons be sent to a correctional facility.
Adebayo Happiness and Timileyin Kolawole are facing charges of conspiracy and culpable homicide, accused of causing Awesu’s death on August 9, 2024.
Meanwhile, Happiness’ parents, Adebayo Adeniyi and Bukola Adeniyi, are accused of tampering with evidence to conceal the crime, offenses punishable under the Kwara State Penal Code Law of 2006.
Additionally, Adeoye Adeola, Lawal Aminat, and Peter Bulus are charged with conspiring to dump Awesu’s body at a refuse site along Wara Road, Ilorin. Their actions fall under the Kwara State Prohibition of Dealing in Human Parts Law, 2018.
The case has drawn public attention, with many demanding swift justice for the slain student.
