From David Onuoja, Abuja
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, has expressed satisfaction with preparations for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election, scheduled for February 21, 2026.

He made this statement after assessing readiness at Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Bwari Area Councils, Abuja.
Prof. Amupitan emphasised the need to restore public confidence in the electoral process through performance, stating, “We must begin to redeem our image through what we do, not necessarily what we say”.
He noted that Electoral Officers reported high readiness levels, with one council at 99.9%, another at 90.8%, and a third at 100%.
The Chairman verified the availability of materials, including batched non-sensitive materials, and commended staff for their focus and determination.
Amupitan stressed that peaceful conduct and proper result management are non-negotiable, directing that results be counted and declared at polling units and transmitted to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.
INEC Boss dismissed claims that INEC is experimenting with result transmission, affirming that the BVAS is capable of accreditation and uploading results to the IReV portal. While reminding staff of their oath of neutrality and duty to discharge responsibilities professionally.
The FCT Area Council election serves as a benchmark for similar state elections. INEC reiterates its determination to ensure a free, fair, credible, and inclusive election reflecting the people’s will.
