From Joseph Adahnu, Yola

Adamawa State government, has confirmed the death of eight persons following a suspected Buruli ulcer outbreak in Malabu community, Fufore Local Government Area of the State.

The state government through the Commissioner for Health, Chief Felix Tangwami, disclosed this to journalists in Yola, the state capital.

He said the government expressed concern over the situation, noting that some victims are currently receiving treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola.

Hon. Tangwami also stated that samples have already been collected and dispatched to the National Reference Laboratory for further investigations.

He emphasised that health officials have placed the community under close monitoring to prevent further spread of the suspected disease to neighboring vilages.

Adamawa state government he added, is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, WHO, and partners, to contain the situation, Tangwami said.

“Our medical team is working around the clock to stabilise the victims’ condition.” The Commissioner added that measures are in place to contain the spread. This include the deployment of emergency response teams, awareness campaigns, and the provision of medical supplies to the affected community.

While sympathising with the people, he appealed to residents to remain calm, avoid panic and maintain good hygiene practices,  report suspicious cases to health facilities and avoid patronising traditional remedies to prevent worsening infections.

The treatment which involves antibiotics, if left untreated, could lead to permanent disability.
