Tension flared in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Saturday, following a confrontation between operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and members of the Amotekun Corps over the custody of a theft suspect.
The incident, which occurred around 8:00 a.m. at the Ijoka area near Sunday Bus Stop, began when police officers from the Ijoka Divisional Headquarters responded to a distress call about a theft at a nearby church.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olushola, the police had successfully arrested the suspect and recovered stolen items before members of the Amotekun Corps stormed the scene, reportedly in the company of commercial motorcyclists, and forcefully took custody of the suspect.
“In the process, one of our officers was injured while carrying out lawful duty,” Olushola stated, adding that the situation prompted the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, to deploy tactical teams to restore order.
Following a brief standoff, senior officers from both security outfits engaged in dialogue which led to the return of the suspect and the exhibits to the police.
However, the resolution was disrupted when some Amotekun operatives, unhappy with the outcome, allegedly fired shots into the air, prompting the police to disperse the crowd with tear gas.
The police maintained that no shots were exchanged between the agencies and called for restraint and professionalism in future engagements.
“We are committed to working in synergy with all security stakeholders to maintain peace in Ondo State. All operatives must respect the boundaries of their authority and the laws guiding their actions,” the police spokesperson emphasised.
Residents have been assured of their safety, as the command reaffirmed its dedication to law and order.
